Animal Control

The City of St Thomas has an ordinance "that all dogs kept, harbored or maintained in the City of St Thomas must be licensed if over three months of age."

Items must be provided before a license is issued:

  • Owner's name, address and telephone number;
  • Breed, color and sex of dog;
  • Name of dog;
  • Proof of rabies inoculation.

Licenses, regardless of the date of issuance, shall expire April 30th of each year.

The cost is $5.00 and can be obtained by contacting the city auditor.

PIT BULLS, DOBERMANS, PRESA CANARIO OR ROTTWEILERS OR ANY DOG WHICH HAS THE APPEARANCE AND/OR CHARACTERISTICS OF BEING PREDOMINANTLY OR A COMBINATION OF THE ABOVE BREEDS WILL NOT BE ALLOWED IN THE CITY LIMITS.

Section 8-104 Restrictions on Owners of Dogs

  • Permit such a dog to run at large at any time within the City of St Thomas;
  • Permit such a dog at any time to go upon school grounds, unless such a dog is restrained by a leash;
  • Permit such a dog to bite, hare, frighten or chase any person or vehicle with the city limits;
  • Permit such a dog to destroy any property that is not the property of the owner;
  • Permit such a dog to go without a collar or tag;
  • Permit such a dog to go without being inoculated for rabies, if over three months of age;
  • Permit such a dog to bark, howl, yelp, cry or otherwise utter noises which may be bothersome or annoying to neighboring residents at any time day or night;
  • Every person having custody or control of an animal on the property other than his/her own shall be equipped to and shall collect the animal's solid waste when eliminated.
